Awards! (and a bit of grumbling)

Been too busy to write the last week or so. Been busy, period: work stuff, new nephew stuff, birthday parties to attend, yadda. And also, idiotically, exercised after eleven p.m. more than once in the last week. (That is a recipe for stiffness and soreness all the next day, I have discovered.)
Have been reading, though, and being read; I appreciate the reviews -- and the awards!! Thank you, very much, to those who voted for me in Round 24 of the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards!

Also: a bit of venting. Someone 'reviewed' today at FF.N to tell me they liked
backagainharry, they noticed it had been awhile since an update, and they wanted an email back to confirm they could adopt it. Um? STABBITY OMFG. I never mind people borrowing bits of my ideas; I encourage it, in fact. Plus, you know, the attention that particular story gets compared to the rest of my oeuvre always kind of unnerves me. But. To ask to take the story itself? Who does that, especially with such a cheery assurance I'd agree? My profile should make it pretty damn clear that (a) I'm still writing, lots in fact; and (b) that story isn't abandoned; I'm just slow. Hell to the no. *bristles defensively*

Date: 2011-09-14 07:40 am (UTC)I've seen people rant before about others wanting to 'adopt' their stories on fanficrants, and it always floors me that there are people out there who are so presumptuous. I understand how readers long for updates to a WIP; I've got two long-running Firefly WIPs that I follow and would be thrilled to see updates for (yes, one of them is Book's Legacy ;) ), but seriously, I can't imagine the level of gall it takes even to demand an update, much less request to take over the whole story. So yeah, your bristling is totally justified here.
How rude!
Date: 2011-09-14 08:16 am (UTC)Though pretty please an update for Back Again Harry would be nice - didn't realise it had been WIP for so long! (I am also holding out for an update on "Pet Project" the other long running WIP but that has been going for longer!)
Congrats on the awards and enjoy the nephew time!

Date: 2011-09-14 09:10 am (UTC)As for the person wanting to adopt your story... (shakes head and sighs). There appears to be a segment of fandom, especially around ffn, who seem to think that
(a) any story which hasn't been updated in a year is abandoned, whether or not the author has said so
(b) any abandoned story is fair game to be finished by someone else
This person is worse than usual, because they didn't even wait a year before assuming it was abandoned. On the other hand... they get plus points for contacting you - some don't bother - and minus points for informing you of their intent rather than asking permission.
Holy presumptions, Batman!
I would be wary, in case they decide to go ahead without your permission.

Date: 2011-09-14 09:11 am (UTC)I may be a dissenting voice on this issue, please don't take offense. Sometimes a story /has/ been abandoned, and the author /doesn't/ mind someone picking up where it was left off. (I mean, people write fanfic sequels of books, do they not?) I understand that this is not the case for you, but I don't see how making the request is rude, unless the request itself was worded offensively. Now if they started posting a continuation without any attempt to contact you, on the other hand...
I realize there is a difference between someone writing a fanfic of a fanfic and the official adoption of an abandoned fic -- the second implies the author has acknowledge the new writer as continuing the "canon", as it is. You said that you don't mind someone using bits of your ideas; do you mind if people write fics of your fics, or unofficially set in the 'verses you create?

Date: 2011-09-14 11:28 am (UTC)Perhaps this idiot has a young child that they've really not been giving the attention that they should and wouldn't mind if someone adopted him/her? :-)

Date: 2011-09-14 01:13 pm (UTC)As for that twit on FF.N, I can understand politely asking if you minded them finishing up the story, but simply assuming it's all right and asking for confirmation is bullshit, pure and simple! Presumption does not even begin to cover that. I would definitely keep an eye on them and report them to FF.N if they steal your story; that is, if it's possible to report someone on FF.N in the first place. :-/

Date: 2011-09-14 03:29 pm (UTC)And the person adores your story, that's all to the good; the shortstopping it before it gets to the completed phase by you isn't good, though. I'm sure you worded things so there was no misunderstanding.

Date: 2011-09-14 05:24 pm (UTC)The adopt thing? Seriously! The whole adopting fic thing creeps me out a bit, ok, more than a bit. But to ask just 'cause you haven't updated in a while? *headdesk* This is why ffn is the bad place...
