Pick a Number! Go on, Pick One!

It's been more than 100 works ago since I last did this meme, too. Maybe it'll get some conversation going? :)
I currently have 803 works archived at AO3. Pick a number from 1 (the most recent) to 803 (the first thing I posted there), and I'll tell you three things I currently like about it.
Since those posts range from 100 word fics to 100,000 word fics, I can't promise how voluble or interesting those answers will be, but it should be fun regardless. :)

Date: 2017-04-20 05:24 pm (UTC)What don't I like about this story, besides the fact that I'm having trouble finishing it? :) But here are three points that strike me first ...
1) I'd wanted to redeem Imhotep ever since that scene at the end of Mummy 2 when he lets go, but in a healthier way than hooking him back up with his ex. Buffy's evolution of opinion about black vs white over the course of the show seemed like a good way to go there, and I'm pleased it's working out well with the readers, too.
"There's evil, and then there's evil," Buffy replied, softly, staring at the sour curve of Imhotep's mouth. "There's the insane, hates-all-things-living kind of evil, and if he was that kind of evil, it would definitely be a bad idea to keep him around. But the other kind, the kind that paves the road to hell with the best intentions--"
2) The reincarnation thing. The show dropped that bit from the movie like a hot potato, despite keeping other plot points, but it's always fascinated me - there are a lot of stories they could have told with it, and it was the perfect canon-provided shortcut to bridge over the communication gap, here.
Buffy woke with a gasp, curling closer against her firm pillow, and shivered as a warm, resonant voice murmured to her in question. "What do you dream of?"
"Blood. Victory, and death," she mumbled automatically in reply. Then she stiffened as she realized just who her pillow was-- and the fact that neither of them had spoken English.
3) A better excuse for the whole Immortal thing than Buffy actually dating him!!! Ugh.
She'd originally struck up an acquaintance with the Immortal for one very important reason, one that all the flirting and dating and dancing were only window dressing for: there might be no Willy to beat up for rumors in the Eternal City, but there was a focal point for supernatural traffic, and Paolo was it.

Date: 2017-04-20 05:36 pm (UTC)Ahaha, that's one of the many 10k+ fic I've written that started out as a single short oneshot, and then mutated because the idea was too good to let go.
1) Clone!Daniel! I've never been happy about the way the show created Clone!Jack and then dropped him like a rock; from the clone's perspective, he just lost absolutely everything and had to start over. So I gave him a buddy.
... And then dropped them in Sunnydale, of an age with Dawn. :)
2) Cutesy awkward teenage romance! I've encountered comparatively little of that in Buffy fic compared to Grand Tragic Romance a la Angel or Spike. But seriously, they're teenagers. That was fun to play with. For as much as I disliked Dawn when she first appeared on the show, I've appreciated her a lot more in retrospect, revisiting the series for late-season fic.
3) Fixing Season 7 and incidentally derailing all the future-comic-season angst (and worse, vis: Fray) that Joss seems intent on bogging all the characters down with. MY BABIES. *hugs them all* I especially was intent on giving Buffy (and Spike too, given the scenario) a healthier emotional future, and I think I managed that.

Date: 2017-04-20 06:49 pm (UTC)I wrote the first part days before Paul Walker's death; because of the ominous way I'd ended it, I really felt like I was going to have to do the concept justice, and that stalled me on the story for a few years.
But here are three reasons I finally went back and finished it:
1) Brian Prime.
It's always been the end-goal for the Revenge of the Fallen rewrite to have Brian involved in that vision of the ancient Primes with Sam, because of the way he's been so deeply involved with the Allspark stuff in the saga. I have still-too-spoilery to mention Goals for what's going on with that (and to straighten out some of the other backstory mess Bay created with the movies) that he'll definitely need the nod for. :)
2) Mikaela.
Ever since I saw Dark of the Moon the first time, I knew the in-story reason she'd 'broken up' with Sam had to be that whats-his-name the collaborator had tried to provide that 'spy close to the Autobots'. But obviously something other than her giving in and being that spy happened, and tragically nobody among the Autobots ever found out about it.
Since nothing of the kind was going to happen in this universe; and also because Sam wasn't given the luxury of flailing around pretending to be a normal kid and failing to grow up for awhile longer; there was obviously not going to be a Sam/Carly pairing. I guess Carly was OK? But the writers using the change in GF to add in the conflict of her wanting Sam to be 'safe' aggravated me. So I wanted to celebrate Mikaela's continuing presence in my version a little. :)
3) Advancing my OCs' interactions a bit. :)
Only dust remained where the Autobots had been; Belle was the only one still waiting, revving his engine impatiently.
Bestia spun her wheels by way of reply, then sped by, flashing her tail lights tauntingly at his grill.
I was tempted to say 'Optimus' or 'Jetfire' or 'de-idioting the movie in general' instead, because seriously, the twins, and who decided having a senile robot was a good move for any other reason than forcing the human characters to do a little more work for the plot? But Belle and Bestia are more fun to focus on. :) Getting them a little more interaction time and things to do other than be irritated at each other was a nice consequence of this particular chunk of the 'verse!

Date: 2017-04-27 09:51 pm (UTC)That's the fourth one I wrote in the "Ancient Slayers" B:tVS/Firefly series, but chronologically the first, and really the one that tied together and solidified it as a series, even though it's B:tVS-only, set right in the aftermath of the series finale. So let's see. Three things I currently like about it?
1.
I wrote this piece intending to both explain how Buffy and Faith end up functionally immortal, and to how Buffy ended up so broken in the future, without either thing being the actual plot of the story, and I think I pulled that off pretty well?
2.
Family complexities - I have a thing for close sibling relationships, blood or otherwise, I guess? But also for not letting people get away with bullshit they haven't apologized for or even recognized they did wrong; I'm still steamed about the Scoobies throwing Buffy out of her house, when I think of it. So: Buffy and Dawn rebonding as sisters; and the root of them pulling away from the Scoobies. Which are both part of the setup for #1, and satisfying in their own right (for this particular story).
3.
Kind of a side note but: this series, this story specifically, is actually where I finally started liking Dawn. And still do to this day. Go figure. =)
