YMMV a lot on the horror related content - there's some fairly standard sci-fi thriller type stuff that comes with being outside of Earth's environment most of the time (the show definitely falls on the hard-science end of the scale on that), which mostly doesn't bother me. Then there's the protomolecule that occasionally shows up to affect the plot (definition on the wiki: "an infectious agent of extra-terrestrial origin.") I found the descriptions of it heavy on the body-horror in the book, but they tone it down a lot in the show; the moments where it does show up felt no worse to me than, hmm, maybe your average zombie movie? Definitely not bad enough (to me) to outweigh the rest of the excellence.

Also, re: catching up - the seasons are only 10 or 13 episodes long? So counting the new season (Season 4) there's only been 46 episodes total so far. :)
