There are a few really good authors. And a few terrible ones. But I was always intrigued by the fact that Lucas and Paramount like to pretend they're all one continuous 'verse, so you get OCs from one trilogy popping up in others, and events have consequences, and so on, even if Lucas himself stepped on some of the established book canon when he wrote the prequels.

But even the really terribly written ones could be avoided; the 'verse went on. Until they spun out the "New Jedi Order" arc as a major connected series and started killing off beloved characters and sending the whole galaxy to the trash heap... *sigh* I got into Star Wars for the happily ever after, not to see the Next Generation take up the family War-and-Sith heritage and take the New Republic down in flames.

I do like Luke's (eventual) wife, though, Mary Sue or not. And Truce at Bakura, being set right after Return of the Jedi, had some interesting notes about consequences that I wanted to follow up on.
