I'm glad you enjoyed this! I wasn't sure Gary-fic would get too many comments in the new 'verse; I've been pleasantly surprised.

I'm mentally writing Gary in as the Beta-shift navigator, at the moment; and of course they rotate shifts sometimes. So just because we don't see him on the bridge at the end of the movie, doesn't mean he isn't there. *grin*

You'd have to go to Memory Alpha wiki to look up Winona Kirk's canon details; but I think a lot of people are assuming that she has to have been a Starfleet officer when she got pregnant (since families weren't canonically assigned to ships until Next Generation era a hundred years later) and that in Reboot!verse she reactivated her commission at some point when Jim was old enough to leave behind, hence that "just because your mother's off planet" in the car scene.
