It always interested me how Kirk basically had his two anchors at opposite ends of the spectrum in Spock and Bones, but before Spock, and before Gary's death, the dynamic had to have been rather different; so I thought I'd explore that a little.
It's kind of vague in WNMHGB, but according to research from other sources, Gary's actually a year younger than Jim; apparently they meet in TOS when Jim is the TA in a class Gary's taking, and then later they get posted to various ships together. Since Jim goes to the Academy 5 years late in the Reboot universe, though, he completely misses Gary's attendance timeframe, hence Gary being out for a few years already by the time he meets Jim here.
